Every art material sold in the United States has to carry a small line of text: "conforms to ASTM D4236". It is required by the Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act, and it means the product has been reviewed and labeled for long term health hazards, not that it is automatically safe for children.

That line is a good example of how much information hides on craft packaging. Pigment grade, lightfastness, fabric compatibility and machine features all decide whether a bargain is really a bargain.

Student or artist grade?

Paints, pencils and pastels usually come in two grades. Artist grade uses more pigment and fewer fillers, so colors are stronger and mix more cleanly, while student grade costs less and is fine for practice and learning.

Check lightfastness if your work will be displayed. Many paint makers rate it using ASTM standards, where a rating of I means excellent resistance to fading and II very good, while lower ratings can fade noticeably in sunlight.

For children or classrooms, look for the AP seal from the Art and Creative Materials Institute. It means a toxicologist has reviewed the product and found no ingredients in amounts that could harm people, including children.

Paper and surfaces

Paper is sold by weight in grams per square meter (gsm), and heavier paper handles wet media without buckling. Around 300 gsm is the common weight for watercolor paper, while lighter papers suit sketching and dry media.

Watercolor paper also comes in textures. Cold pressed paper has a slight texture that suits most painting, hot pressed is smooth for fine detail, and rough has the most texture for loose, expressive work.

For work you want to keep, choose acid free paper, which resists yellowing and becoming brittle over time. Canvas and canvas boards follow the same rule: primed, archival surfaces cost more but last far longer.

Starting a new craft on a budget

When trying a new craft, buy a small starter set in the middle grade rather than the cheapest kit. Very cheap supplies can make a technique look harder than it is, while professional supplies are wasted while you are still learning.

Spend first on the item that affects results most. In painting that is usually paper or brushes, in sewing it is the machine, and in jewelry making it is good pliers and findings.

Store supplies properly to avoid waste. Keep paint tubes capped, keep paper flat and dry, and keep beads and findings in sealed containers so metal parts do not tarnish before you use them.

Choosing a sewing machine

Singer has made sewing machines since 1851, and today the choice is between mechanical and computerized models. Mechanical machines are simpler and easier to repair, while computerized ones add many stitch options, automatic threading and embroidery on some models.

Props and prop money

Prop money is made for film, photography and theatre. In the US, reproductions of currency must be printed on one side only and at less than 75% or more than 150% of the size of a real note, which is why legitimate prop money looks different up close.

Buy only from sellers who follow these rules and mark their notes clearly as props. Passing prop money as real currency is a crime almost everywhere.
