American households spent a record $79.0 billion on their lawns and gardens in 2025, according to the National Gardening Association's 2026 National Gardening Survey. That works out to about $740 per gardening household, also a record.

The same survey found that 4.5 million households stopped gardening that year. So the money came from fewer people spending more, and a lot of it went on bigger purchases like robot mowers, patio sets and indoor growing kits rather than a few packets of seeds.

Garden and outdoor living splits into six fairly different kinds of purchase. Each one has its own thing to get right before price even matters.

How do robot mowers know where your lawn ends?

Husqvarna built the first robot mower, the solar powered Solar Mower, in 1995, and followed it with the Automower in 1998. Today the big names include Husqvarna, Worx and Segway, which sells its mowers as Navimow, alongside newer wire free specialists such as Mammotion.

Older robot mowers follow a boundary wire that you bury or peg around the lawn. It works, but laying it takes an afternoon, and changing the layout later means moving the wire.

Most newer models skip the wire and use RTK satellite positioning instead. Ordinary GPS is accurate to about 2 to 5 meters, while RTK corrects the signal down to 1 to 2 centimeters, which is precise enough to mow along a flower bed without a wire.

RTK needs a correction signal. Some mowers get it from a small base station you mount in the garden, and some get it over the internet; Mammotion's iNavi service, for example, streams corrections over WiFi or a built in 4G connection instead of using a base station.

The catch is sky view. Satellite positioning struggles under dense trees and close to tall walls, so many mowers pair RTK with cameras or LiDAR to keep working in those spots. If your lawn has heavy tree cover, check which fallback a model uses before you buy.

Think about when the mower will run, too. Researchers at Aarhus University tested 19 robot mower models on hedgehog carcasses and found that some nudged the body and turned away while others drove straight over it, so schedule mowing for daylight hours if hedgehogs or other small animals visit your garden at night.

Remote controlled mowers like Mowrator are a different tool. You drive them rather than letting them run on a schedule, which suits steep banks, rough ground and large plots better than a robot built for a flat suburban lawn.

What to compare on a robot mower spec sheet

Maximum lawn area is the headline number, but it assumes ideal conditions. Pick a model rated comfortably above your real lawn size, because slopes, narrow passages and separate zones all cut into it.

Maximum slope is the next number to check, usually given as a percentage. A lawn that looks gentle can still have a bank steeper than a budget model can climb.

Then look at what costs extra. A garage cover, an RTK base station, spare blades and a 4G subscription can all be sold separately, so compare the full kit price, not the mower alone.

How long do garden seeds last?

Seeds do not go off on a fixed date, but they lose germination rate every year. Iowa State University's extension service gives these typical storage lives when seeds are kept cool and dry:

That changes how a seed discount is worth using. Stocking up on a cheap multi pack makes sense for cabbage or radish, but for onion or sweet corn you should only buy what you will sow this season or next.

Check the "packed for" year on the packet as soon as it arrives. Then store seeds in a sealed container somewhere cool and dry, since heat and moisture shorten their life faster than anything else.

How much light do indoor plants actually need?

Grow lights are sold on wattage, but plants respond to the total light they receive over a day. Growers measure that as the daily light integral, in moles of light per square meter per day.

A Virginia Tech extension guide published in August 2025 recommends 12 to 17 for lettuce and 20 to 30 for tomatoes. In practice, a light that grows good salad greens can leave tomato plants leggy and short of fruit.

To compare lights fairly, look for efficiency in micromoles per joule (µmol/J) rather than wattage. The DesignLights Consortium, which runs the main independent list of qualified horticultural LEDs, requires at least 2.5 µmol/J under its Horticultural V4.0 rules, so a light well below that figure is turning more of your electricity into heat than into usable light.

So decide what you want to grow before choosing a grow tent or light kit. Leafy greens and herbs are forgiving and cheap to light, while fruiting crops need a stronger light or longer hours to match.

Patio furniture and canopies

The frame decides how long outdoor furniture lasts. Aluminum does not rust and suits coastal or rainy areas, powder coated steel is heavier and cheaper but can rust where the coating chips, and resin wicker holds up well as long as the frame underneath is aluminum.

Cushions usually wear out before the frame. Solution dyed acrylic fabric resists fading far better than printed polyester, and removable covers you can wash will add years to a set.

Pop up canopies are built for shade, not weather. Weigh down every leg and take the canopy down when strong wind is forecast, because a gust can lift an unanchored canopy and bend the frame.

Pools and hot tubs

This category also covers above ground pools and inflatable hot tubs. Check the ground where it will stand first, because a filled pool is extremely heavy and needs a flat, level base.

Plan for safety and running costs before buying. Many areas require fencing or a locking cover around pools, and heating, chemicals and a pump add to the cost every month the pool is in use.

When prices tend to drop

Outdoor furniture follows the season. Prices are highest in spring, when everyone is setting up their patio, and fall once summer ends, with late August into September usually bringing the biggest clearance sales as stores make room for autumn stock.

Robot mowers have no dependable sale month. When a brand releases a new model, the previous generation is usually the one that gets discounted, so it is worth comparing the two before paying full price for the newest version.

Seeds are the exception. Popular varieties can sell out early in the year, so a small discount in January is often worth more than waiting for a bigger one on a variety that is gone by spring.

Getting the most from a coupon in this category

Most of these purchases are large and bulky, so shipping matters as much as the discount. Check whether a code applies before or after freight charges, especially on patio sets and garden sheds.

On robot mowers, a percentage code on a bundle that already includes the base station and garage is usually worth more than the same code on the mower alone. Also read the returns policy before you buy, because some large items can only be returned at your own cost.
