Google Workspace Statistics (2026): Users, Pricing, and India GST
Google doesn’t publish Google Workspace’s exact revenue or a clean paying customer count in its earnings reports. Most “Google Workspace statistics” you find online paper over that gap with old, recycled numbers or a market share percentage pulled from a tracker that doesn’t actually measure what it claims to.
This article sticks to what Google and credible reporting have actually stated, with dates, and says clearly where a number is a marketing figure rather than a measured one. Pricing is verified directly from Google’s own India pricing page, since that’s what matters most for readers here.
Every figure below is sourced and checked as of August 2026.
- Scale: Google states Google Workspace serves over 3 billion users and more than 13 million customers, as of April 2026. The 3 billion figure blends free personal Google accounts with paid subscribers and hasn’t changed since at least 2021.
- Revenue isn’t disclosed separately: Alphabet folds Workspace into the Google Cloud segment. The only official signal is repeated “double digit revenue growth” language across 2025 and 2026 earnings calls.
- India pricing: Base starts at ₹99 a user monthly, Starter at ₹270, Standard at ₹1,080, verified directly from Google’s own India pricing page. GST is added on top and isn’t included in the listed price.
- Gemini is now bundled: Since March 2025, Gemini AI features come included in Business and Enterprise plans at no extra cost, replacing the separate $20 and $30 add on tiers Google used to charge.
- Market share numbers vary wildly: Different tracking tools put Google Workspace’s share anywhere from 12% to 79%, depending entirely on what they measure. No single number is reliable enough to state as fact.

From Google Apps to Google Workspace
Google Workspace has changed names four times since it launched. Each rename tracked a shift in who Google was actually building it for.
Google Apps for Your Domain launches, bundling Gmail, Calendar, Talk, and Page Creator for a custom domain.
Renamed Google Apps Premier Edition, later Google Apps for Business.
Renamed Google Apps for Work.
Renamed G Suite.
Renamed Google Workspace, the name it still carries today.
How Many People Actually Use It
Google’s most recent public claim, made in an April 23, 2026 Workspace blog post, states Google Workspace serves over 3 billion users and more than 13 million customers, from solopreneurs to the Fortune 500. That 3 billion figure needs context Google doesn’t provide upfront.
Google has used the identical “3 billion” number since at least October 2021. It blends free personal Google account holders with paying Workspace subscribers rather than counting paid seats separately, so it isn’t a fresh measurement of business adoption.
The paying customer figure is murkier still. Business Standard reported in May 2025 that Google Workspace had crossed 11 million paying customers, citing a Google executive. Alphabet’s own Q4 2025 earnings release, published February 4, 2026, confirmed “more than 11 million paying customers across enterprise, business and education,” and Google’s Cloud Next wrap up pushed that to 13 million plus by late April 2026.
That paying customer number has a real, documented growth history, not just two or three recent data points. Google has disclosed a specific milestone at several points since 2015.
Google’s own disclosed milestones: 2015 and 2017 via TechCrunch coverage of Google announcements, 2019 via Google Workspace blog, 2020 via CNBC, 2024 to 2026 via Google’s own earnings releases and blog posts. Checked August 2026.
The specific Fortune 500 figure that circulates most, “60% of the Fortune 500 uses Google Workspace,” traces back to a Google SEC filing from November 2015, over a decade old. Google’s most recent, current Fortune 500 style figure isn’t about Workspace at all: Sundar Pichai stated in the July 22, 2026 earnings call that nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 now use Gemini Enterprise, a separate product from Workspace itself.
What About Gmail and Drive Specifically
Individual app user counts get repeated constantly with no real source behind them. The “1.8 billion Gmail users” and “2 billion Drive users” figures common across statistics sites don’t trace back to anything Google has actually said.
The last time Google named a specific Gmail number was 1.5 billion, stated for Gmail’s 15th birthday in April 2019. At Google I/O in May 2026, Sundar Pichai said 13 Google products each have over a billion users, and 5 of those have passed 3 billion, without naming which 5 on stage.
Google Drive’s last specific figure was 1 billion users, announced at Google Cloud Next in July 2018. An even older figure, 2 trillion files stored and 800 million daily active users, dates to May 2017 and hasn’t been updated publicly since.
Why There’s No Real Workspace Revenue Number
Alphabet does not report Google Workspace revenue as its own line item. It sits inside the broader Google Cloud segment alongside Google Cloud Platform infrastructure revenue, with no split published between the two.
The closest thing to an official signal is language Alphabet’s CFO has repeated across recent earnings calls. In the Q1 2026 call on April 29, 2026, CFO Anat Ashkenazi said Workspace “again delivered strong double digit revenue growth, driven by an increase in the number of seats and the average revenue per seat,” the same language used the prior quarter.
For scale, the Google Cloud segment Workspace sits inside posted $24.8 billion in revenue for Q2 2026, up 82% year over year. That figure includes cloud infrastructure sales and isn’t a Workspace only number, so don’t treat it as one.
What is genuinely striking, pulled directly from five consecutive Alphabet earnings releases, is how fast that segment’s growth rate has been accelerating rather than holding steady.
Google Cloud segment results, Alphabet’s own quarterly earnings releases. Year over year growth rate shown alongside each figure. Checked August 2026.
Year over year growth for the segment climbed from 32% to 82% across those five quarters, not a one time jump. Full year 2025 Google Cloud revenue totaled $58.7 billion, and Alphabet said the segment exited 2025 at an annual run rate above $70 billion.
Google Cloud’s order backlog has grown even faster than revenue. It stood at $155 billion in Q3 2025, roughly doubled to $240 billion by Q4 2025, nearly doubled again to over $460 billion in Q1 2026, and reached $514 billion by Q2 2026, a sign of demand booked for future quarters rather than already recognized revenue.
Google Cloud’s Physical Footprint
The infrastructure Workspace runs on has a real, disclosed physical scale. As of Google’s own locations page, last updated July 23, 2026, Google Cloud operates 43 regions and 130 zones, with access to its infrastructure from over 200 countries and territories.
That network includes more than 200 network edge locations connected by over 10 million kilometers of fiber. Alphabet backed that expansion with 2026 capital expenditure guidance of $175 billion to $185 billion, disclosed in its Q4 2025 earnings release, most of it aimed at AI and data center infrastructure.
None of that headcount or infrastructure spend is broken out for Workspace specifically. Alphabet only discloses total company employee count, which grew from 185,719 in Q1 2025 to 198,933 by Q2 2026, company wide across every product.
Market Share Numbers Aren’t as Clean as They Look
Search for Google Workspace’s market share and you’ll get a different answer depending entirely on which tool you ask. Technology detection tracker 6sense puts Google Workspace at 78.9% against Microsoft Office at 12.22%, measured by counting companies whose email headers and DNS records show Workspace in use.
Other trackers using different methods report figures as low as 45% for Google, or as high as 77% for Microsoft in enterprise specific segments. None of these measure actual paid seats or revenue, they detect technology signals, so no single percentage here is reliable enough to state as fact.
What’s consistent across sources is the general shape, not the number. Google Workspace leads in raw company and domain count, driven heavily by small business and education use, much of it on free tiers. Microsoft 365 leads in enterprise seat share and Fortune 500 penetration specifically.
Google Workspace Pricing in India
India gets its own plan structure, verified directly from Google’s own pricing page rather than a global USD figure converted after the fact. It includes an entry level Base tier not present in Google’s US facing plan names.
| Plan | Storage | Price (excl. GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Base | 20 GB/user | ₹99/user/month |
| Starter | 30 GB/user | ₹270/user/month |
| Standard | 2 TB/user pooled | ₹1,080/user/month |
| Enterprise | 5 TB/user, upgradeable | Custom quote |
Fetched directly from workspace.google.com’s India pricing page, checked August 2026. Promotional discounts on Base and Standard were active at time of check but are time limited.
All listed prices exclude India’s 18% GST, which gets added at checkout. How you buy affects whether that GST is recoverable for a registered business.
Global Pricing, With a Caveat
Google’s pricing page geo redirects to India specific pricing for every request we made while researching this article, so we couldn’t independently confirm current US pricing the same way we verified the India table above. Multiple pricing trackers commonly report Business Starter at $7, Business Standard at $14, and Business Plus at $22 per user monthly on an annual commitment, with Business Standard’s 2 terabyte pooled storage matching what Google’s own admin documentation confirms.
At least one 2026 pricing tracker reports higher figures, $8, $18, and $28 respectively, which may reflect a price increase not yet reflected everywhere else. Confirm current USD pricing directly on Google’s site before relying on either set of numbers for a US purchase.
Gemini Is Now Included, Not an Add On
Google used to charge separately for AI features inside Workspace, $20 a user monthly for Gemini Business and $30 for Gemini Enterprise as standalone add ons. That changed on March 17, 2025, when Google folded Gemini into Business and Enterprise plan pricing at no additional cost.
How much Gemini you actually get still depends on your tier. Business Starter gets Gemini inside Gmail only, features like drafting help, while full Gemini access across Docs, Sheets, and Meet requires Business Standard or above.
Google announced a wider set of Workspace features at Cloud Next 2026 on April 23, 2026. Workspace Intelligence connects semantic relationships across Workspace apps to power AI agents, Sheets Canvas turns spreadsheet data into interactive dashboards, and Take Notes for Me expanded meeting capture to in person meetings alongside Zoom and Teams calls through Google Meet.
Reliability: Outages, Not Breaches
Google Workspace has had real, documented service availability incidents in the past year. On November 12, 2025, Drive, Sheets, and Docs access issues, including SSL errors for some customers, began around 9am Pacific time.
On February 18, 2026, a background process bug removed conversation metadata from Gemini inside Workspace, causing empty chat sidebars and missing saved conversations for affected users. Third party monitoring service StatusGator counted 51 separate Workspace outages since January 2025, though that’s an aggregator’s tally, not a Google confirmed count.
We found no confirmed security breach for Google Workspace in this research window, only availability incidents. Worth stating plainly, since the two get conflated online more than they should.
Google Workspace vs Microsoft 365, Head to Head
Storage is the comparison people get wrong most often. Google Workspace’s Business Standard pools 2 terabytes across Gmail, Drive, and Photos into a single shared allowance per user.
Microsoft 365 Business Standard offers 1 terabyte of OneDrive storage per user, but keeps mailbox storage separate at roughly 50 gigabytes, rather than pooling everything into that 1 terabyte figure. The two numbers aren’t directly comparable without accounting for that split.
| Google Workspace Plan | Meeting Participants | Recording |
|---|---|---|
| Business Starter | 100 | No |
| Business Standard | 150 | Yes |
| Business Plus | 500 | Yes, plus attendance tracking |

Google’s Recent India Specific Moves
Google has made several India specific commitments through 2026, mostly centered on education rather than Workspace pricing directly. In January 2026, Google.org committed a ₹85 crore grant to Wadhwani AI, targeting AI powered learning tools for 75 million students and 1.8 million educators by December 2027.
Google India also signed an agreement with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to launch an AI enabled state university at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut. At I/O Connect India 2026, Google announced expanded Gemini support for Indian languages and new data localisation options aimed at enterprise customers.
Google Workspace for Education, particularly its free Education Fundamentals tier built around Google Classroom, has a strong footprint among CBSE affiliated K to 12 schools in India, largely because the entry tier costs nothing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many users does Google Workspace have?
Google states over 3 billion users and more than 13 million customers as of April 2026. The 3 billion figure has stayed unchanged since at least 2021 and blends free personal Google account holders with paying subscribers, so it isn’t a fresh measurement of business adoption.
How much does Google Workspace cost in India?
Verified directly from Google’s own pricing page, Base starts at ₹99 a user monthly, Starter at ₹270, and Standard at ₹1,080, all excluding 18% GST. Enterprise pricing requires contacting Google’s sales team directly.
Is Gemini AI included in Google Workspace?
Yes, since March 17, 2025, Gemini is included in Business and Enterprise plans at no extra cost, replacing the separate $20 and $30 monthly add on tiers Google used to charge. How much Gemini access you get still depends on your specific plan tier.
Does Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 have more market share?
It depends entirely on which tracking tool you check, with reported figures for Google ranging from 12% to 79% depending on methodology. What’s consistent is that Google Workspace leads in company count driven by small business and education use, while Microsoft 365 leads specifically in enterprise seat share.
How much revenue does Google Workspace generate?
Alphabet doesn’t disclose Workspace revenue separately, it’s folded into the broader Google Cloud segment. The only official signal is repeated “double digit revenue growth” language from Alphabet’s CFO across 2025 and 2026 earnings calls.
Does GST apply to Google Workspace pricing in India?
Yes, an 18% GST is added on top of listed Workspace prices in India. Buying directly from Google bills in USD with no GST line, which isn’t input tax credit eligible, while buying through an authorized Indian reseller provides a GST invoice that registered businesses can claim credit against.

How fast is Google Cloud revenue growing?
Growth has been accelerating for five straight quarters, from 32% year over year in Q2 2025 to 82% in Q2 2026, per Alphabet’s own earnings releases. Full year 2025 Google Cloud revenue totaled $58.7 billion, and the segment exited 2025 at an annual run rate above $70 billion.
How many businesses actually pay for Google Workspace?
Google has disclosed paying customer milestones since 2015: 2 million businesses that year, 3 million in 2017, 5 million in 2019, 6 million in 2020, and over 13 million by April 2026. That’s more than doubled since 2020, even though Google’s headline “3 billion users” figure hasn’t changed since 2021.
