Car seats have an expiry date. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most manufacturers set it at about 6 to 10 years from the date the seat was made, because plastics weaken over time and safety standards improve.

Choosing a car seat
Buy a car seat for your child's weight and height, not their age. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping children rear facing until they reach the highest weight or height their seat allows, since rear facing seats protect the head and neck best in a crash.
Check the safety standard for your country. In the US, seats must meet the federal standard FMVSS 213, and in the EU only seats approved under the newer R129 standard can be sold since September 2024.
Avoid second hand car seats unless you know their full history. A seat that has been in a crash can be damaged in ways you cannot see, and many used seats are close to or past their expiry date.
Choosing a stroller
Match the stroller to how you live. Compact strollers fold small for cars, public transport and travel, while full size strollers and travel systems give more storage and a smoother ride for everyday walks.
Check the folded size against your car boot, the weight you will be lifting, and whether a newborn can lie flat in it. Many strollers only suit newborns when used with a carrycot or a compatible infant car seat.
Baby carriers and slings
A carrier keeps your baby close with your hands free, and many parents use one more than a stroller in the early months. Check the weight range, since some carriers need an insert for newborns and others suit toddlers.
For healthy hip development, look for a carrier that holds the baby's thighs supported with knees higher than bottom, often described as the M position. The International Hip Dysplasia Institute lists carriers it recognizes as hip healthy.
Keep your baby's face visible and airways clear at all times in a sling or wrap. A baby's chin should never be pressed against their chest.
High chairs and boosters
A high chair is used from about six months, when babies start solid food, until they can sit at the table. Convertible high chairs that become a toddler seat or booster last longer and often work out cheaper over the years.
Look for a five point harness, a stable wide base and a tray that removes easily for cleaning. Fabric padding that can go in the washing machine saves a lot of scrubbing.
Safe sleep products
The safest sleep setup for a baby is a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet and nothing else in the crib. In the US, the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, signed in May 2022, banned the sale of crib bumpers and inclined sleepers.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against weighted sleep sacks and weighted blankets for infants. A regular, non weighted sleep sack is a safe way to keep a baby warm instead of loose blankets.
Feeding gear
For bottles, cups and plates, check what they are made of and whether they are dishwasher safe. Glass, stainless steel and BPA free plastics are the common choices, each trading weight against durability.
Buy a small number of bottles and teats first, because babies can be particular about teat shape and flow. Once you know what works, a larger set is easier to justify.
New, used or rented?
Some gear is safe to buy used, such as high chairs, play mats and clothes, as long as it is clean, complete and not recalled. Car seats and cribs are the exceptions to be most careful with, since safety standards change and damage is not always visible.
