On August 29, 2025, the United States stopped letting small imports in duty free. Until then, a shipment worth under $800 could cross the border without paying duty, and plenty of small businesses built their buying around that rule.

Now every commercial shipment into the US goes through formal customs entry and pays duty, whatever its value. If you buy wholesale stock, packaging or supplies from overseas, the price on the supplier's page is no longer close to what the order really costs you.

How does buying wholesale on Alibaba work?

Alibaba is a marketplace, not a single seller. You deal directly with thousands of manufacturers and trading companies, each setting its own minimum order quantity, price tiers and lead time.

Order a sample before a bulk run. A sample costs more per unit, but it is the only reliable way to check material, finish and packaging before you commit to hundreds of units you cannot easily return.

Pay through Trade Assurance, Alibaba's own payment protection. Alibaba holds the payment and can refund you if the supplier never ships or the goods do not match the order, and buyers pay nothing extra for it.

The protection only covers what is written in the order itself. A promise made in a chat about color, material or packaging does not count unless it appears on the order, so put every specification that matters into the order before you pay.

Who pays for shipping on a wholesale order?

Suppliers quote using Incoterms, the standard trade terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce. The same unit price can mean very different totals depending on which term sits next to it.

An EXW quote almost always looks cheapest and a DDP quote almost always looks most expensive. Compare them only after adding freight, duty and customs fees to the cheaper quotes.

What does a wholesale order really cost?

Work out the landed cost: the product price, plus freight, insurance, import duty, customs brokerage and delivery to your door. That figure, divided by the number of sellable units, is your true cost per item.

Import duty depends on the product's tariff code and its country of origin. Ask the supplier which code they use, then check the duty rate with your own customs authority or broker before ordering, because the rate can turn a good deal into a loss.

Other countries set their own rules for low value imports, and several have been tightening them. Check the current threshold for wherever your goods are landing rather than assuming last year's rule still applies.

How strong does a shipping box need to be?

Corrugated boxes are rated by one of two tests. An edge crush test (ECT) rating measures how much weight a box can take when stacked, while a Mullen or burst rating measures how much pressure it takes to punch through the wall.

A 32 ECT box and a 200 lb Mullen box are the everyday standards, and both are commonly rated to carry about 65 lb. Choose ECT for boxes that will be stacked on pallets, and choose a burst rated box for heavy or sharp items that could puncture the wall.

Why do carriers charge more for a light parcel?

Carriers bill whichever is higher: the actual weight or the dimensional weight. In the US, UPS, FedEx and USPS all calculate dimensional weight as length × width × height in inches, divided by 139.

A box measuring 13 × 11 × 9 inches is 1,287 cubic inches, which works out to about 9.3 lb, rounded up to 10 lb. Ship a 3 lb item in it and you pay for 10 lb.

That is why box size often matters more than box price. Buying several sizes that closely fit what you ship usually saves more on postage than any discount on the boxes themselves.

Buying industrial and MRO supplies

Match parts by the manufacturer's part number and rating, not by the photo. A cable, fuse, bearing or safety glove that looks right but carries the wrong rating can fail at the worst possible time.

Ask for a proper business tax invoice with your company details on it. In countries with GST or VAT, that invoice is usually what lets you claim back the tax paid, which can be worth more than a checkout coupon.

Group small orders where you can. Industrial suppliers often charge delivery per order, so one monthly order for consumables usually costs less than several small ones.

Choosing a banner or sign

Vinyl banners are sold by weight per square yard. Banner printers commonly quote 13 oz vinyl for events and short outdoor use, while 18 oz is thicker, stands up better to wind and usually includes a blockout layer so both sides can be printed without one showing through the other.

For fences, scaffolding and exposed sites, mesh banners let wind pass through the material. A solid banner in strong wind acts like a sail and can tear its grommets out.

Check the printer's file requirements before you order. Large prints need artwork sized for the final dimensions, and a small web image stretched to banner size will print blurry however good the material is.

When to order ahead

If you buy from Chinese factories, plan around Chinese New Year, which falls on February 6, 2027. The official holiday lasts about a week, but many factories slow down weeks before it and take weeks to return to full output afterwards.

Importers commonly place production orders for early in the year by November. Packaging and shipping supplies are the other pinch point, with demand rising in the months before the year end shopping season.

Getting the most from a coupon in this category

Business suppliers often limit codes to a first order or to a minimum spend. Check whether the code works alongside volume pricing, because the tier price for a larger quantity is sometimes worth more than the coupon.

On custom printing, check whether the code covers design fees, rush production and shipping or only the print itself. On wholesale orders, remember that a discount on the unit price does nothing to freight or duty, so compare deals on landed cost.
