What is a game key?

A game key is a code that unlocks a game on a platform such as Steam, the Epic Games Store, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo. Once redeemed, the game is added to your account permanently, just as if you had bought it in the platform's own store.

Keys exist because publishers sell games through many retailers, not only the platform store. Retailers can then set their own prices and run their own sales.

Authorized store or marketplace?
