First Order Coupons: Medicines offersDeal type

The same medicine can cost very different amounts depending on the brand name on the box. Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient in the same strength as branded ones, and India's Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana sells generics through dedicated Jan Aushadhi stores at a fraction of the price of many brands.

That makes medicines one of the categories where knowing what you are buying saves more than any coupon. This category covers online pharmacies and medicine delivery, from India's 1mg, PharmEasy, Netmeds, Apollo 247, Truemeds and MrMed to UK services such as Phlo Clinic and US telehealth services such as Winona.

Lab tests are in Diagnostics, and vitamins in Supplements.

Buying medicines online safely

A legitimate online pharmacy asks for a valid prescription for prescription medicines, lists a registered pharmacist and shows its licence details. In the UK, registered pharmacies appear on the General Pharmaceutical Council's register, and in the US, sites with the .pharmacy domain are verified by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.

Sites that sell prescription drugs without a prescription, or at prices far below everyone else, are a serious risk. Counterfeit medicines can contain the wrong dose, the wrong ingredient or harmful contaminants.

Branded or generic?

Generic medicines must contain the same active ingredient, strength and dosage form as the original brand. The differences are usually in inactive ingredients, packaging and price.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether a generic is suitable for you. For a few medicines with a narrow therapeutic range, doctors may prefer you stay on the same brand consistently.

How medicine prices are controlled in India

In India, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority sets ceiling prices for essential medicines listed in the National List of Essential Medicines. Pharmacies cannot legally sell these above the ceiling price, and the maximum retail price is printed on every pack.

Discounts on online pharmacies are taken off that printed price. Compare the final price after discount rather than the percentage, since different brands of the same medicine start from different MRPs.

Over the counter medicines and self care

Over the counter medicines such as pain relievers, antacids and allergy tablets can be bought without a prescription for minor problems. Read the label for the maximum daily dose, and check the active ingredient, since several combination products contain the same drug, such as paracetamol, which makes accidental overdose easy.

Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant or are buying for a child.

Substitutions on online pharmacies

Online pharmacies in India often suggest cheaper substitutes with the same composition. Check that the substitute has the same salt, strength and form, and confirm with your doctor before switching regularly used medicines.

Temperature sensitive medicines

Insulin, some injectables and certain eye drops must be kept cold. Order these only from pharmacies that ship them in cold packs, and check that they arrive still cold.

Telehealth prescriptions

Many online pharmacies partner with telehealth services, where a doctor reviews your case online and issues a prescription. Check that a registered doctor is involved, and be wary of services that approve every request without questions.

Managing regular medicines

For long term medicines, refill reminders and repeat orders help you avoid running out. Order a few days early, especially around holidays, when deliveries can be delayed.

Keep a list of all your medicines, including supplements, and share it with any new doctor or pharmacist to avoid interactions.

Medicines for travel

If you travel with prescription medicines, carry them in their original packaging with a copy of the prescription. Some medicines that are legal at home are restricted in other countries, so check the rules for your destination before you fly.

Pack enough for the whole trip plus a few extra days, and keep them in your carry on bag in case checked luggage is delayed.

Returns and disposal

Most pharmacies do not accept returns of medicines once delivered, for safety reasons. Check your order carefully on arrival, and ask your pharmacy how to dispose of expired or unused medicines safely.

When medicines go on sale

Online pharmacies in India run regular discounts on medicines and healthcare products, with extra offers on first orders and during big sales. Health memberships offered by some pharmacies give ongoing discounts for regular buyers.

Making a medicine coupon go further

Compare the final price after discounts across two or three licensed pharmacies, since prices on the same medicine vary. Memberships can pay off for people on regular medication, but check the annual fee against your usual spending.
