First Order Coupons: Domains offersDeal type

You never truly own a domain name, you register it for a period of up to ten years at a time and renew it. Registrars such as GoDaddy, Namecheap and Name.com sell domains under rules set by ICANN, the body that coordinates the internet's naming system, while each ending, such as .com, is run by a registry, which sets the wholesale price.

That structure explains why the same domain can cost very different amounts at different registrars, and why renewal prices move. This category covers domain registrars, from GoDaddy, Namecheap, Name.com, Domain.com, Dynadot and DomainRacer to regional registrars such as BigRock, Crazy Domains, One.com, DomainFactory and EuroDNS, plus blockchain domains from Unstoppable Domains.

For somewhere to put your site, see Hosting and Website Builders, and for security certificates, SSL.

How to choose a good domain name

Short, easy to spell and easy to say out loud works best. Avoid hyphens and numbers that people might mistype, and check that the name is not a trademark someone else owns.

Google has said that keywords in a domain name have hardly any effect on ranking, so choose a name that fits your brand rather than stuffing it with search terms.

.com or another ending?

The .com ending is still the most familiar worldwide. Country endings such as .in, .co.uk or .de signal a local business and can help local visitors trust the site.

Newer endings such as .shop, .store and .app are widely available and often cheap for the first year. Check the renewal price, since some cost much more after the first year.

Why first year prices are low

Registrars often sell the first year below cost to win customers, then charge the normal price at renewal. Compare the renewal price, not just the first year, and consider registering for several years if the renewal price is fair.

Registries can also raise wholesale prices, which pass through to renewals. Budget for small increases over time.

Domain privacy and WHOIS

Domain registrations used to publish the owner's name, address and email in the public WHOIS directory. Since data protection laws such as the EU's GDPR, most personal details are hidden, and many registrars include free privacy protection.

Check that privacy is included, since some registrars still charge for it.

Transferring a domain

You can move a domain to another registrar by unlocking it and getting an authorization code from the current one. Transfers usually add a year to the registration, so a cheap transfer price can work like a discounted renewal.

Under ICANN rules, a newly registered or recently transferred domain is usually locked from transfer for 60 days.

Protect your domain from expiring

Turn on auto renewal and keep the payment method up to date, since an expired domain takes your website and email offline. After expiry, there is a grace period to renew, then a more expensive redemption period, after which anyone can register it.

Use an email address for the domain account that does not depend on the domain itself.

Keep domain and hosting separate?

Registering a domain with a separate registrar from your host makes it easier to change hosts later, since you only update the DNS settings. Bundles with a free domain are convenient but tie the two together.

Buying a domain someone already owns

Premium and resale domains are sold through marketplaces and brokers, often for far more than a normal registration. Use an escrow service for large purchases, which holds payment until the domain is transferred to you.

Blockchain domains

Blockchain domains such as those from Unstoppable Domains work with crypto wallets and some browsers. They are not part of the ICANN system, so most standard browsers cannot open them without an extension or special settings.

Securing your domain account

Turn on two factor authentication at your registrar and enable registrar lock. A hijacked domain account can redirect your website and email.

Using your domain for email

A domain lets you use a professional email address, such as your name at your business domain. Some registrars include basic email forwarding, while full mailboxes usually come from your host or a separate email provider, set up through DNS records.

Add SPF, DKIM and DMARC records when you set up email. Major mailbox providers now expect them from senders, and without them your messages are more likely to land in spam.

When domains go on sale

Registrars run discounts on Black Friday and when promoting new endings. Registries also run promotions that make particular endings cheap for a limited time.

Making a domain coupon go further

Domain coupons usually apply to new registrations of specific endings, and some cover transfers or renewals. Use them for the longest term that stays within the coupon's rules, and add privacy and auto renewal before checking out.
