In 2008, researchers publishing in the Journal of the American Medical Association tested Ayurvedic medicines bought online and found that about one in five contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic. Many of the affected products were rasa shastra formulations, which deliberately include metals as ingredients.

That study is the reason quality and licensing matter so much in this category. Ayurveda covers herbal supplements, classical medicines, oils and personal care rooted in the traditional Indian system of medicine, from long established makers such as Himalaya, Baidyanath, Zandu, Kerala Ayurveda and Organic India to newer brands such as Kapiva, Dr Vaidya's, Upakarma, Gynoveda and Ayuvya.

Ayurvedic skincare and haircare are also in Skincare and Haircare, and vitamins and protein in Supplements.

How Ayurvedic products are regulated

In India, Ayurvedic medicines are regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and overseen by the Ministry of AYUSH. Manufacturers need a licence, and the licence number should appear on the pack.

Products sold abroad may be classed as dietary supplements rather than medicines, which means lighter oversight. Buying from established brands that publish heavy metal testing is the safest approach, especially for mineral based formulations.

Classical formulations and proprietary blends

Classical Ayurvedic medicines, such as Chyawanprash, Triphala and Ashwagandha churna, follow recipes from traditional texts. Proprietary blends are a brand's own combination of herbs, often marketed for a specific concern such as stress, digestion or immunity.

For proprietary blends, check the amount of each herb per dose, not just the list. Some products include a long list of herbs in very small amounts.

What does the evidence say?

Evidence varies widely between herbs. Ashwagandha has been studied for stress and sleep with some positive results, and turmeric's curcumin is widely researched, though it is poorly absorbed without additives such as black pepper extract.

For many other products, good quality clinical evidence is limited. Treat Ayurvedic remedies as a complement to medical care, not a replacement for it, particularly for serious or long term conditions.

Safety and interactions

Herbal products can interact with prescription medicines, just like conventional drugs. Tell your doctor about any Ayurvedic product you take, especially if you are on blood thinners, diabetes or thyroid medication, or are pregnant.

Stop a product and seek advice if you notice side effects. Natural does not always mean safe, and dose matters for herbs as much as for medicines.

Ayurvedic consultations online

Several brands offer free or paid consultations with Ayurvedic practitioners, often linked to product recommendations. Check that the practitioner holds a recognized qualification, such as a BAMS degree in India, and be cautious of consultations that always end with a large product bundle.

Oils, teas and everyday wellness

Many Ayurvedic products are for everyday use rather than treatment, such as herbal teas, massage oils and digestive blends. These are lower risk, and organic certification is a useful quality signal for herbs and teas.

Immunity claims and Chyawanprash

Immunity is one of the most common claims on Ayurvedic products, especially Chyawanprash, a traditional herbal jam built around amla. Amla is rich in vitamin C, but no single product can make the immune system work better than a balanced diet, sleep and vaccination.

Check the sugar content of Chyawanprash and similar preparations, since many are largely sugar or jaggery. Sugar free versions exist for people watching their intake.

Daily routines and practices

Ayurveda places weight on daily routines, known as dinacharya, such as oil pulling, tongue scraping, oil massage and eating at regular times. Many of these are low cost habits that need little more than a tongue cleaner or a bottle of oil.

Practices such as a regular sleep schedule and mindful eating align well with modern health advice, which makes them a sensible starting point before buying supplements.

Storage and shelf life

Herbal powders and churnas lose potency with heat, light and moisture. Keep them in airtight containers in a cool place, and check the manufacturing and expiry dates when buying larger packs.

Ayurvedic products abroad

Outside India, Ayurvedic products are usually sold as dietary supplements or cosmetics. Check local regulations and buy from sellers that ship products tested for the destination market, since some classical formulations are restricted in other countries.

When Ayurvedic products go on sale

Ayurvedic brands run regular sales on their own sites and during festive season sales in India. Combo packs for a single concern, such as digestion or sleep, are common and usually cheaper than separate items.

Making an Ayurveda coupon go further

Buy directly from the brand or a licensed retailer, since counterfeit and unlicensed products are sold online. Start with a single small pack to see whether a product suits you before buying a multi month supply at a discount.
