Since May 12, 2025, hotels, resorts and vacation rental platforms selling to people in the United States have had to show the total price, including mandatory resort and service fees, whenever they show a price at all. The rule comes from the US Federal Trade Commission's Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees, and it ended the practice of revealing a nightly "resort fee" only at the last step of checkout.

Outside the US, drip pricing still happens, so the first habit of hotel booking is the same everywhere: compare the final total, not the headline rate. Is it cheaper to book direct or through a booking site?

Neither is always cheaper. Booking sites such as Booking.com and Expedia make comparison easy and sometimes carry package or mobile rates, while chains such as Marriott, IHG and Accor keep their lowest "member rate" for people who join their free loyalty programs and book on the chain's own site.

Booking direct also makes changes easier, since the hotel holds the reservation itself. Check both routes for the same room type, board basis and cancellation policy before deciding.

How are hotel prices set?

Hotels use dynamic pricing, so rates move with demand, local events, the day of the week and how far ahead you book. City hotels are often cheaper at weekends when business travel drops, while resorts are usually cheaper midweek.

Read the most recent reviews, since a hotel can change quickly after a renovation or a change of management. Look for repeated mentions of the same problem, such as noise, cleanliness or WiFi, rather than one angry review.

Guest photos show rooms as they really are, while official photos are taken at their best. Check the room size in square meters to compare rooms fairly.

Location matters more than stars

A cheaper hotel far from where you want to be can cost more once taxis and travel time are added. Use the map view on booking sites to check walking distance to transport and the places you plan to visit.

Star ratings are set differently from country to country, and some are self assigned. Reviews and facilities tell you more than the number of stars.

Booking for families and groups
